As the temperature of the ocean increases, the coral reacts by expelling the zooxanthellae causing the color to drain. Without the algae, the coral will die. Coral reefs serve as natural barriers against waves and floods during storms. Without the coral, the damage to coastal communities would be significantly larger, exactly why we must protect our coral.
